Falling food prices and "who will farm"——based on the empirical analysis of Y town in Dongting Lake Plain
The decline of food price has an important influence on the behavior choice of agricultural planters and promote the agricultural transformation. The study found that under the background of non-agricultural labor transfer, the rural society generally formed the structure of "the old-aged agriculture +the middle-farmer agriculture", who were the main agricultural planters. The decline of food price makes it impossible for the old-age and "middle-farmer" who mainly invest in household labor to realize their cashed expectation of labor. The old-age retreat to "ration fields" or even withdraw from planting. "Middle-farmer" withdraw from agricultural production, and "who will farm" becomes a problem. The capitalist-style family farm which pursues the scale of profit maximization based on the double investment of family labor and capital and has the power of continuous expansion of reproduction takes advantage of the opportunity to take over the land from the old-age and "middle-farmer". As a result, the falling food price has promoted the transformation of agricultural production from "old-age agriculture + middle-farmer agriculture" to capitalist-style family farms.
