On the impact of the establishment of national high-tech zones on the income gap between urban and rural areas
Rural revitalization and the construction of national high-tech zones are important strategy for the central government to promote high-quality development. However, existing studies mostly focus on the impact of the establishment of national high-tech zones on regional technological innovation and economic growth but have not yet investigated their impact on urban-rural income gap, which can not provide valuable acdemic information on how to combine it with the rural revitalization strategy to narrow urban-rural inequality Using panel data of 178 prefecture-level cities in China from 2005—2016 and double difference model, this paper empirically studies the effect of the establishment of national high-tech zones on the urban-rural income gap to provide new ideas for multiple policies to promote common prosperity. The results show that the establishment of national high-tech zones can significantly reduce the urban-rural income gap, which is the strongest in the central region, the second strongest in the east and the weakest in the west, and the stronger in small and medium-sized cities and weaker in large cities. Therefore, strengthening the construction of national high-tech zones in central regions and small and medium-sized cities and relatively enhancing the construction of rural revitalization in western regions can better reduce the urban-rural income gap.
